We're excited to announce an evening of dinner and discussion with Astoria Bookshop as the launch of our Books & Bites series. We will be basing the evening around Eat This Poem by Nicole Gulotta, featuring a three-course, one-night-only tasting menu. Seating is limited so grab your tickets now, you won't want to miss this one-of-a-kind event!
Eat This Poem opens us up to the fresh ways of accessing poetry and lends new meaning to the foods we cook. The twenty-five inspiring poems in this book--from such poets as Marge Piercy, Louise Gluck, Mark Strand, Mary Oliver, Billy Collins, Jane Hirshfield--are accompanied by seventy-five recipes that bring the richness of words to life in our kitchen, on our plate, and through our palate.
Purchase tickets via Eventbrite! Each ticket entitles you to a copy of Eat This Poem, a three-course tasting menu and a glass of beer or wine.

RaRe Film Series
Curated by internationally acclaimed writer/director Keith Bearden, we are beginning our winter/spring RaRe Film Series of rarely screened feature films and shorts. Don’t miss this opportunity to see amazing cinema from around the world, many making their NYC screen debuts. All this for $5 suggested donation and $1 house-popped Mexican popcorn.
Jan 15 - Crime Wave (1985) Writer/Director: John Paizs
Ultra-rare and totally bonkers Canadian meta-movie about a writer trying to produce the perfect crime story. Imagine David Lynch directing a Zucker Brothers comedy. Unreleased in the USA.
Jan 29 - Fleshpot on 42nd Street (1973) Writer/Director: Andy Milligan
No-budget Times Square sleaze auteur Andy Milligan’s accidental masterpiece of early 70s hustlers and deadbeats, from a man who knew it well. Forget 70s NYC nostalgia--Fleshpot is so real it hurts.
Proceeded by Stefan Nadelman's Terminal Bar (2002), a short documentary about one of Times Square's most notorious pre-Giuliani dive bars.
Feb 12 - Songs From the Second Floor (2000) Writer/Director: Roy Andersson
Apocalyptic tragicomedy from Sweden’s master of the ultra-deadpan.
Proceeded by World of Glory (1991), rarely-screened short film by the director.
Feb 26 - Playing with Fire (1975) Writer/Director: Alain Robbe-Grillet
Sexy surrealism from the writer of Last Year at Marianbad.
Proceeded by La vie d’un Chien (2005), John Harden's fake French sci-fi comedy.
March 5 - Club Sandwich (2013) Writer/Director: Fernando Eimbcke
Mommy issues threaten to derail a young man’s summer romance.
Proceeded by Bruno (2007) by NYC’s own Sam Goetz.
March 19 - Soft for Digging (2001) Writer/Director: JT Petty
Chilling understated art-house horror from Brooklyn director JT Petty.
Proceeded by The Giant (2012) by local filmmaker David Raboy.
April 2 - The Taste of Tea (2004) Writer/Director: Katsuhito Ishii
Psychedelic take on the dreams, hopes and fears of one small-town Japanese family.
Proceeded by City Paradise (2004), animated short film by Gaelle Denis.
April 16 - Nothing Lasts Forever (1984) Writer/Director: Tom Schiller
The weirdest film Bill Murray’s ever done. A smash at Cannes, financed and then abandoned by Warner Brothers.
Proceeded by BAFTA-winning The Eagleman Stag (2011) by Mikey Please.
April 30 - Melody (1971) Director: Warris Hussein
Lovely film about two UK pre-teens who decide to get married and become terrorists when they are not allowed.
Proceeded by The Raftman’s Razor (2004) by Keith Bearden
